Probationary Periods
Individuals receiving original appointments to permanent or time-limited permanent positions must serve a probationary or a trainee period. This period is an essential extension of the selection process and provides the time for effective adjustment of the new employee or elimination of those whose performance will not meet acceptable standards. The duration of a probationary appointment shall be not less than three or more than nine months of either full-time or part-time employment from the actual date of employment. The probationary period will be waived for employees who are a former State employee having a break in service no greater than 31 calendar days, a promotion or lateral transfer if the probationary period has been completed, or a re-employed layoff priority candidate returning to work within their 12 month layoff priority period unless a legitimate business need for the probationary period exists.
